We’re very lucky here in Melbourne - it’s such a special place mixed with difference influences around the world, This love affair with sweets is no different and mirrors the city's multicultural roots, innovative spirit, and dedication to quality ingredients.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Melbourne's dessert scene was heavily influenced by British culinary traditions. Classic puddings, scones, and cakes were the mainstay of many households and tea rooms. It was during this period that the iconic Lamington, a sponge cake dipped in chocolate and coated with coconut, made its debut, quickly becoming a cherished Australian favorite. We even had our own take on the lamington on our menu at one stage - perhaps we should reintroduce this as it was a very popular flavour with customers still asking for this!

The post-World War II era brought a significant wave of immigration, introducing a myriad of new flavors and techniques. Italian gelato, Greek baklava, and French pastries began to appear in the city's burgeoning bakeries and patisseries. Melbourne’s Lygon Street in Carlton became synonymous with authentic Italian desserts, offering rich cannoli and tiramisu that delighted the taste buds of both locals and visitors.

In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to meet someone who hasn’t been touched by mental health issues, either directly or through connections with friends and family. Despite this, mental health often remains a stigmatized topic—shrouded in silence, tucked away as taboo, and fraught with the fear of judgment.

At Drizzl’d, we're breaking that silence. We believe that opening up about mental health is essential, not just for healing but also for fostering a community where support and understanding are readily available. 

You might not know this, but my background is not just in business. I have well over a decade of experience in nursing in the field of Cardiothoracics Surgery and Respiratory Medicine and healthcare management, roles that brought me face-to-face with a spectrum of health challenges experienced by patients and staff. These experiences were profound, teaching me the importance of empathy and active listening. Whether sharing a positive note or navigating the complexities of mental health struggles, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of simply being there for someone. 

This personal journey has not been without its own trials. Like many, I’ve navigated the ups and downs of life, feeling the strain of mental health challenges within my circle of friends and family. These experiences have deeply influenced my approach to business and life, igniting a fervent passion to advocate for mental health awareness.
