ORIGINS OF CHURROS

Churros, those delightful, golden, and crispy pastries dusted with sugar, have a rich and fascinating history. Originating in Spain, churros have become a beloved treat around the world, but their journey to global fame is a tale worth telling.

Now serving at Drizzl’d until late at night!

The exact origins of churros are somewhat debated. One theory suggests that they were brought to Europe by Portuguese explorers who discovered a similar pastry in China, known as "youtiao." The Spanish adapted the recipe, creating the ridged, star-shaped churros we recognise today by using a star-shaped nozzle to pipe the dough. Another theory posits that churros were invented by Spanish shepherds. Living high in the mountains with limited access to fresh bread, these resourceful shepherds created churros from basic ingredients like flour, water, and salt, which they could easily carry and cook over an open flame.

Regardless of their precise origins, churros quickly became popular across Spain and were enjoyed at all times of the day, often paired with a cup of thick, rich hot chocolate. From Spain, churros spread to Latin America and the Philippines, brought by Spanish colonisers. Each region has since put its own spin on the classic treat, with variations including fillings like dulce de leche, chocolate, or fruit.

At Drizzl’d, we are excited to bring this delicious tradition to our menu. We serve fresh, handcrafted churros that stay true to their Spanish roots while offering a modern twist.
